Cinnamon and Diabetes Control

​Am still on . And for that reason this post would be talking about another natural diabetes control bordering on and diabetes.

There are way too much Nigerians suffering from the disease despite the abundance of natural treatments that can help control the condition.

Thus this post and consequent ones would be aimed at placing more light on the condition and ways to contain it.

Still on that path, today’s method would be centered on cinnamon and diabetes. The relationship and effect the spice has on the disease.

  1. A 2012 review of several recent studies concluded that the use of cinnamon had a potentially beneficial effect on glycemic control. One study published in 2009 found that a 500 mg capsule of cinnamon taken twice a day for 90 days improved hemoglobin A1C levels — a reflection of average level for the past two to three months — in people with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes (hemoglobin A1C levels greater than 7 percent).
  2. It can also help lower blood by increasing insulin sensitivity , making insulin more efficient at moving glucose into cells.
  3. One study of seven men showed taking cinnamon increased insulin sensitivity immediately after consumption, with the effect lasting at least 12 hours.
  4. In another study, eight men also demonstrated increases in insulin sensitivity following two weeks of supplementing with cinnamon.
  5. Lu et al, 2012: This was a Chinese study of 66 subjects with Type 2 diabetes who were given a placebo (inactive treatment), or 120 milligrams or 360 milligrams of cinnamon extract, along with a sulfonylurea (oral diabetes medicine), for 3 months. Both HbA1c and fasting were significantly reduced in the treatment groups but not the placebo group . Lipid levels remained unchanged. The authors concluded that cinnamon is effective at improving glucose control in Chinese patients with Type 2 diabetes.
  6. Akilen et al, 2012: A review of six clinical trials with 435 subjects who were given doses of cinnamon from 1–6 grams per day, and followed for between 40 days and 4 months, showed a “significant decrease” in average HbA1c levels of 0.09%.
  7. Allen et al, 2013: A review article of clinical trials looking at the effect of cinnamon on blood sugar and lipid control concluded that cinnamon is associated with a “statistically significant” decrease in fasting blood sugar, total cholesterol, LDL (“bad” cholesterol), and triglyceride levels (a type of blood fat), but not HbA1c. However, the preferred dose and duration of therapy is still unclear.
  8. Shane Ellison, MS, a medicinal chemist and founder of the Sugar Detox , explains. “(Cinnamon) works directly on the muscle cells to force them to remove sugar from the bloodstream, where it is converted to energy,” he says. “It’s even shown to work better than most prescription meds.”

These Cinnamon and Diabetes relationship is meant to show the benefits to be derived from the spice.
