Most Nigerian’s are ignorant of , they are ignorant of the of beets, even though it can be bought at major markets in the country.

So what are the health benefits?

The health benefits of beets include treatment of anemia , indigestion, constipation , piles, kidney disorders, dandruff, gallbladder disorders, cancer , and heart diseases. They also help to prevent macular degeneration, improve blood circulation, aid in skin care, prevent cataracts, and treat respiratory problems .

Health Benefits Of Beets

The roots and leaves of beets have plenty of medicinal uses which include the following:

  1. Improve Heart Health

Beet fiber will help reduce cholesterol and triglycerides by increasing the level of HDL (good) cholesterol.

The bad side to having high levels of triglycerides is that it increases the risk for heart-related problems.

Also the nutrient betaine lowers the levels of homocysteine in the body which can really harm the blood vessels.

2. Reduce Birth Defects

Beets are good for pregnant women since they are a source of B vitamin folate which helps in the development of infant’s spinal column.

Deficiency of folate can lead to a variety of conditions called neural tube defects.

3.Lower Your Blood Pressure

Drinking beet juice may help to lower blood pressure in a matter of hours. One study found that drinking one glass of beet juice lowered systolic blood pressure by an average of 4-5 points.

Beets contain a high concentration of nitrates, which have a blood pressure-lowering effect. This may lead to a reduced risk of heart attacks, and stroke.

4. Prevent Certain Cancers

Studies have shown that beets are good at preventing skin, lung, and since they contain the pigment betacyanins, which counteracts cancerous cell growth.

Researchers in Hungary have also discovered that beet juice and its powdered form slows down tumor development.

5. Improve Liver Health

It is said that Betaines in beet juice helps stimulate the functions of the liver and keep it healthy.

It can help prevent and reduce the accumulation of fat in the liver. Animal studies show that rats given beet juice have higher levels of detoxifying enzymes in their bloodstream. Research on people with diabetes shows that betaine improves liver function, slightly decreases cholesterol, and reduces liver size.

6. Prevent Respiratory Problems
Beetroot is a source of vitamin C that helps to prevent asthma symptoms. The natural beta-carotene in beetroot also helps to prevent lung cancer.

7. Prevent Cataracts

The presence of beta-carotene, which is a form of vitamin A , helps to prevent age-related blindness called cataracts as well as a reduction in macular degeneration that commonly occurs as we get older.

8. Brain Booster

Nitric oxide relaxes and dilates your blood vessels, which in turn increases blood flow to the brain—which could bring on better brain function. That’s particularly important as we age, as research finds that our capacity to generate nitric oxide diminishes as we get older, along with our brain’s energy metabolism and neuron activity.

9. Capillary Fragility

The flavonoids and vitamin C in beets help to support the structure of capillaries.

10. Act as Aphrodisiac

Beets have been considered an aphrodisiac or sexual booster for millennia. Part of this stems from the fact that beets contain significant levels of the mineral boron , which has been shown to boost the production of sexual hormones. This can lead to a boost in your libido, increased fertility, sperm mobility improvement, and a reduction in frigidity in the bedroom.

11. Boost Energy

Beets contain a significant amount of carbohydrates that provide energy for prolonged sports activities. These are the natural building blocks of energy metabolism, and beets provide them without any of the negative of many other carbohydrate-heavy foods .

Eating beets may enhance athletic performance by improving oxygen use and time to exhaustion. To maximize their effects, beets should be consumed 2–3 hours prior to training or competing.

12. Reduce Macular Degeneration

The beta-carotene present in beetroot aids in reducing or slowing macular degeneration in the eyes. Macular degeneration is often

associated with an increase in free radicals, which drastically affect the premature aging process of many people. Beta-carotene is a powerful form of vitamin A, which has antioxidant capabilities and defends the eyes against the damaging effects of free radicals.

13. Prevent Strokes

A deficiency of potassium in the body increases the risk of stroke. Therefore, potassium-rich beetroot is recommended to improve heart health for that reason as well. Potassium is called a vasodilator, meaning that it relaxes the blood vessels and reduces blood pressure throughout the body.

Those are the health benefits of beet that I think its worth knowing and I hope you have learnt something new.
