Is Probiotic Good for Weight Loss?

Is probiotic good for weight loss? Or is it just another reason why you just cant shed off those excess layers of thick body fat? The reason why the obesity seems to have a stubbornness had to contain.

The answer to this question and many more like it, can all find the answer they are looking for in the gut. Yes! Our response to the question “is probiotic good for weight loss” is located in the human gut and that is where we are going to with this post.

Because the the human body contains bacteria, both good and bad.

What is Probiotic?

I think it would be a nice idea to talk about probiotic itself with the following paragraph.

According to a WHO October 2001 report (1)  the term probiotics was defined as live microorganisms that, “when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host.”

As living organisms probiotics are found naturally in foods such as yogurt, kimchi, sauerkraut, miso and kefir. And they are especially for the digestive system.

They are naturally found in the human body but one can also get them from some foods and supplements for the purpose of creating a good balance in the gut between the good and bad bacteria.

And we have inside of us approximately 2,000 different types of bacteria. There are however divided into two main groups in the gut: bacteroidetes and firmicutes.

Probiotics are called the ‘good’ or ‘friendly’ bacteria and we all need a good measure of these kind of bacteria or else why are we even writing this post?

So What Are The Benefits of These Good Bacteria?

Below are the various benefits of probiotics:

  • Strengthens body immunity
  • Improves digestion
  • Improves skin health
  • Produces vitamin B12, butyrate and vitamin K2
  • Creates enzymes that destroy harmful bacteria
  • Stimulates secretion of IgA and regulatory T-cells
  • Reduces cold and flu
  • Weight loss

The last benefit which is weight loss is why we are writing this post and we are not moving pass that topic. So lets begin.

Even though we do not have enough evidence to make a solid case, the already established facts show that there is a relationship between probiotics and weight loss.

Studies in their preliminary stages are already indicating that the relationship between  probiotics and weight loss is in how much and how less of the bacteria we have inside.

  • One fact that is certain is that the gut profile of a normal sized person is different from that of an obese individual. And it has been ascertained that people with obesity had more firmicutes and fewer bacteroidetes, compared to normal-weight people.
  • This is an evident enough fact that the body weight of any individual is related to the balance of these two group of bacteria in their gut.
  • It has also been stated that Probiotics may reduce the number of calories you absorb from food.
  • Probiotics help in releasing the satiety (appetite-reducing) hormone GLP-1. An increased level of this hormone may help burn calories and fat. While also increasing the levels of the protein ANGPTL4. Which may also help  lead to decreased fat storage (2), (3)
  • The Lactobacillus family is said to by very helpful with weight loss and belly fat(4). And in one study it was discovered that eating  yogurt with Lactobacillus fermentum or Lactobacillus amylovorus reduced body fat by 3–4% over a 6-week period.
  • Of all the probiotics, Lactobacillus gasseri is considered the most promising. With studies from Japan already stating that the bacteria has a weight loss effect or more precisely anti-obesity effects (5), (6) .
  • These tiny rascals are also known for preventing the weight gain from even taking place.


All that has been stated above is just different ways from different studies saying Yes! to the question asked above Is Probiotic Good For Weight Loss?

But there are also studies out there even though in the minority, crying out . For instance one of such studies pointed out that another family of the bacteria  Lactobacillus acidophilus can actually lead to weight gain (7). With another study (8), stating that in fact probiotics did not reduce body weight, BMI or body fat levels in overweight or obese adults.

But the point to take from their studies is that not all probiotics can assist with weight loss, and that even some of them may even cause weight gain.

Which simply means that truly probiotics are good for weight loss, you just need to get the numbers up so that you can at least have the right amount of those ones beneficial to weight loss in your gut and not the group that just wont help you out all.

But no matter the fact that there are some bacteria among the good guys that wont help you with your weight loss journey, there are countless other reasons to take a probiotic supplement, weight loss apart.
