- What is in weight loss tea? Tea contains herbs and leafs that are filled with antioxidants like Saponins,Xanthines, flavonoids and caffeine. In the case of ginger, it contains compounds called gingerols and shogaols.
As tea drinkers who do it for the waist line, it is often a normal thought wondering what is in weight loss tea that gives them that magic that we so crave.
That is if they really possess the magic!
The usual claims are that weight loss tea can suppress appetite, increase fat burning and boost metabolism. With an additional bonus of being able to increase energy and cleanse the body of toxins.
First things first, weight loss tea no matter the brand is made up of herbs and leaves, the question however should be directed at these blend of herbs. I believe that is what the question above is all about.
What is in the weight loss tea we all drink these days are majorly antioxidants especially in the case of Green Tea that is known to be high in the antioxidants called catechins (1)(2), which has been associated with weight and fat loss. With the ability to reduce waist circumference.
The EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate) in green tea or if you are the Matcha Green Tea drinking has been show to possess the ability to boost metabolism and stop the growth of fat cells.
That same catechins can be found in White tea as well, making it another worthy ally in the fight against weight gain. White tea extract was found to help break down fat cells and prevent accumulation of fatty tissue
Another tea that seem to pack so much power when it comes to weight loss and which i can attest to is Black Tea. Black tea contain a class of flavonoids called flavones.
And according to medical reports it was discovered that those with a higher flavone intake from foods and beverages like black tea had a lower body mass index (BMI) (3) than those with a lower flavone intake.
In other words the flavones from black tea has been associated with reductions in weight, BMI and waist circumference.
Other tea worth mentioning is the Oolong Tea and is derived from the same plant used to make green tea and black tea.
It is reported that the polyphenols (4) in oolong tea can help boost metabolism and decrease the amount of fat absorbed from your food.
In other words these polyphenol antioxidants could help enhance weight loss by improving fat burning and speeding up metabolism in the body.
At this point it is important to note that weight loss teas contain catechins, polyphenols,flavones and even caffeine. And all them help with either speeding up metabolism or stopping the absorption of fat.
Another tea that has been reported to be able to reduce appetite and boost metabolism is the Yerba Mate Tea (5) by reducing the total number of fat cells and the amount of fat they carry.
Consequently increasing the amount of stored fat that is burned for energy (6).
The tea contains antioxidants such as Saponins that carries certain anti-inflammatory and cholesterol-lowering properties and Xanthines that contains caffeine and theobromine (7).
As for Peppermint Tea a study was able to reveal that 13 healthy people, taking a peppermint oil capsule resulted in reduced appetite compared to not taking peppermint (8).
The leaves contain several essential oils including menthol, menthone and limonene.
More research is however needed on Peppermint tea to make a solid case.
Moving away from regular teas to herbal tea. One herbal tea that i like drinking especially when i feel like warming my inside is Ginger Tea.

Conclusively every normal weight loss tea out there have a combination of these antioxidants in them which is good for the body not only for weight loss but for other health benefits as well.
One fact that is however certain is that these teas can help fight against inflammation in the body which in turn can help you loose weight.
But remember that dieting and exercising are important factors to put into consideration if you must shed those unnecessary pounds off your body structure. Without a proper dieting plan and exercise routine no weight loss tea would work.
