It was back in the university that I mistakenly discovered that Lipton black tea for weight loss is a healthy weight loss practice that can actually reduce our waist size. One that is cheap and easy to prepare like other weight loss teas out there.
I wasn’t looking for a way to loose body fat or build muscle, it was not a conscious decision. I was just drinking the one tea I knew didn’t contain calories. During this period I would drink the black tea without any milk or sugar. And since it was during my exams I was spending more time in the library than usual. Which meant I was going through most of the day without the normal amount of food that my body was accustomed to.
It was just a mindless practice until I started getting comments from friends and family, stating how I was rapidly loosing weight. That was when I started taking notes. That was when I really discovered that Lipton black tea is a fat burner. And ever since then black tea has remain a regular when it comes to tea drinking.

The stories you hear about black tea in Nigeria is sometimes quite alarming. For instance, I have heard from almost a dozen people that drinking black tea is bad because it “dries up blood”. A claim that many people are holding onto even in the absence of medical facts.

Black tea is made from the Camellia sinensis plant. From the same leaf that both green tea and oolong tea is made from and is one of the most consumed beverages in the world. This in itself should be enough evidence that black tea is coming from a solid background when it comes to weight loss.
Black tea is made through a process called oxidation that turns the leaves from green to a dark brownish-black color. While black tea is a fully oxidized tea, green tea is not. The green tea is not allowed to go through the same process as the black tea.

Our body contains two kinds of lipoproteins. The low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and the high-density lipoprotein (HDL). What many people would like to call “good and bad”.
LDL is the “bad” kind of lipoprotein that transports cholesterol to cells throughout the body. While, HDL is the “good” lipoprotein that transports cholesterol away from our cells and instead transports cholesterol to the liver to be excreted.
It is a fact that too much LDL in the body can cause plaques which are LDL build up in the arteries that can lead to problems like heart failure or stroke. Which is a fate you don’t want to experience.
And according to studies black tea may help lower LDL or bad cholesterol levels in the body.
A randomized study found that drinking five servings of black tea per day by individuals with slightly or mildly elevated cholesterol levels reduced LDL cholesterol by 11%.

In yet another randomized 3 month study of 47 individuals. The effects of traditional Chinese black tea extract against a placebo on bad lipoprotein levels was measured. And the result was a significant LDL reduction in those who drank black tea. While those on the placebo did not share similar result, there was also no bad side effect recorded.
Leading researchers to conclude that black tea helped improve cholesterol levels in individuals at risk for heart disease or obesity. 
Black tea may also be able to help reduce blood sugar levels. Increased blood sugar levels may increase your risk of chronic health conditions, such as type 2 diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease, kidney failure and depression. [3, 4]
Consuming sugar causes the pancreas to secrete the hormone known as insulin, which carries the said sugar to our muscles for energy usage. But when we consume too much, the excess is stored as fat.
This is another area where lipton black tea for weight loss comes in handy. And this is because black tea has been found to help enhance the use of insulin in the body.
A test-tube study looked at the insulin-enhancing properties of tea and its various components. And it was discovered that black tea increased insulin activity more than 15-fold. And according to researchers several compounds in tea, specifically a catechin called epigallocatechin gallate was responsible for the improved insulin levels. 
In another study in mice the effects of black and green tea extract on blood sugar levels was compared and the results showed that they both lowered blood sugar and improved how the body metabolized sugar.
Both Black and green tea lowered blood glucose and improved glucose intolerance. 
Even though I am recommending Lipton black tea for weight loss, it should be noted that too much of it is bad.
Drinking large amounts of black tea, or more than four or five cups a day, may cause health problems due to the caffeine content.
Side effects of black tea (drinking too much) may include:
- Anxiety and difficulty sleeping
- Faster breathing
- Increased urination
- Irregular heartbeat
- Nausea and vomiting
- Nervousness and restlessness
- Ringing in the ears
- Tremors 
Researchers were able to show that black tea may promote weight loss and other health benefits by changing bacteria in the gut by altering energy metabolism in the liver by changing gut metabolites. The research was published in the European Journal of Nutrition.
According to the study it was found that black and as well as green tea changed the ratio of intestinal bacteria in the animals: The percentage of bacteria associated with obesity decreased, while bacteria associated with lean body mass increased.
The findings also showed that black tea polyphenols, which are considered too large to be absorbed in the small intestine,are able to stimulate the growth of gut bacterium and the formation of short-chain fatty acids, a type of bacterial metabolites that has been shown to alter the energy metabolism in the liver.
“It was known that green tea polyphenols are more effective and offer more health benefits than black tea polyphenols since green tea chemicals are absorbed into the blood and tissue,” said Susanne Henning, the study’s lead author and an adjunct professor at the UCLA Center for Human Nutrition, which is part of the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. “Our new findings suggest that black tea, through a specific mechanism through the gut microbiome, may also contribute to good health and weight loss in humans.”
“The results suggest that both green and black teas are prebiotics, substances that induce the growth of good microorganisms that contribute to a person’s well-being,” she said.
Drinking black tea in moderate amount is however generally safe for most people. I drink up to 3 cups a day while on some days i drink less than that amount. you can use moderation as the principle guiding your consumption and you will be fine. It works and i am recommending it.
Just like coffee I drink Lipton black tea without sugar or milk. After some days or even weeks you will get use to the taste. I believe it is worth it, as drinking black tea without adding any external form of calories is the best way to to get its weight loss benefits.
There are other brand of black tea out there and you can make your choice from the long list. Lipton Black tea is quite cheap here in Nigeria and that is why it is that popular.
