Is Ginger Good For Weight Loss?

In Nigeria it is a common belief that ginger is good for weight loss and it may not be unconnected to the fact that many Nigerians believe drinking any other tea apart from Milo and Milk is an attempt to loose weight or something close to that.

Weight gain is now a general health concern and more and more people are now beginning to take matters into their hands by trying out different weight loss programs out there, especially fasting. But before we go deep into this post. It is important to point out that weight loss and sleep go hand in hand. So make sure that part is well taken care of before thinking about want weight loss drink to consume.

But loosing weight is not a straight forward situation. It depends on a lot of factors. It depends on if you are only drinking water to lose weight (as the only liquid weight loss aid in tour arsenal) and without taking into account that Lipton black tea for weight loss is also a good addition.

Some Facts About Ginger

Ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe, Zingiberaceae) is one of the most commonly consumed dietary condiments in the world.

The medicinal, chemical, and pharmacological properties of ginger have been extensively reviewed by experts. And has been used for thousands of years for the treatment of numerous ailments, such as colds, nausea, arthritis, migraines, and hypertension.

The name Ginger’s comes from the Middle English gingivere, but ginger itself dates back over 3000 years to the Sanskrit word srngaveram, meaning “horn root,”. While in the Greek tongue, it was called ziggiberis, and in Latin, zinziberi. Its actual origins are uncertain.

Ginger was used as a flavoring agent long before history was formally recorded. It was an exceedingly important article of trade and was exported from India to the Roman Empire over 2000 years ago, where it was especially valued for its medicinal properties.

Indians and Chinese are believed to have produced ginger as a tonic root for over 5000 years to treat many ailments.  In the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, the value of a pound of ginger was equivalent to the cost of a sheep.

It is important to note that there are research evidence suggesting that ginger consumption has anti-inflammatory, anti-hypertensive, glucose-sensitizing, and stimulatory effects on the gastrointestinal tract. 

Is Ginger Good For Weight Loss?

Our concern is to find how ginger can help with weight loss and that is what we are going into, without wasting time.

In a study involving rats, it was discovered that ginger was able to assist in weight loss while suppressing diabetes. The study showed that rats treated with gingerol and fed a high fat duet showed significantly decreased glucose level, body weight, leptin, insulin, amylase, lipase plasma and tissue lipids when compared to normal control. Suggesting that ginger supplementation suppresses obesity induced by a high fat diet.

Ginger Good For Weight Loss

Another study showed that ginger could be effective in increasing satiety. The results, showed that ginger consumption led to enhanced thermogenesis and reduced feelings of hunger. 1, 2

A meta-analysis of 14 studies showed that supplementation with ginger significantly decreased body weight, waist-to-hip ratio, hip ratio, fasting glucose (SMD -0.68; 95% CI, -1.23, -0.05; P = 0.03) and insulin resistance index, while significantly increasing HDL-cholesterol. 3

According to a study cited by WebMD, taking 5 grams of ginger a day for 3 months was able to lower people’s LDL cholesterol an average of 30 points.

How To Make Ginger Tea

Now that we know that ginger is good for weight loss. It is important that we talk about how to properly ingest it for the purpose of weight loss.

I chew ginger root for oral hygiene and that is where it ends. When it comes to weight loss and ginger. The best means of ingestion is through ginger tea.

I like preparing my own ginger tea at home because I don’t like the excess sweeteners added to the commercial ginger teas that I have tried.

1. All you need is the right quantity of ginger roots. Which is dependent on how many cups you want.

2. Secondly, wash the ginger to removes dirt’s and chemicals from the skin. Then grate the ginger roots without peeling off the akin.

3. Add the grated ginger to boiled water. Allow the mixture to seat on fire for some minutes. I allow mine to boil up to 10 minutes on low heat.

And that is just about it. I also allow the ginger tea to cool down before sieving the content. At that moment, its time to drink!
