It is commonplace to hear people chant that obesity is bad. In fact the health condition now have a scary worldwide statistics attached to it.
But the issue is “why is obesity bad?”.
Is it just a matter of going out of shape and loosing every bit of bodily attractiveness?
If it was, then the issue would not be as scary as it is at the moment.
It is worse than just the sudden transformation of our external appearance. It simultaneously affects our inside as well and that is where the real issue is located.
Obesity opens a floodgate of diseases, chronic ones at that and with this post, we shall be listing some of them and i hope it scares you enough for you to understand the importance of staying fit.
It is now a universal health issue that affects both the young and old. In fact we are now living in a time in which more people are getting fatter more earlier in life than was the case years back.
A factual reality that is contained on a post I made on childhood obesity in America.
And the chances of carrying that fat through life has also greatly increased. Due to a more sedentary lifestyle that is now being generally adopted by a world that no longer encourages movement.
Obesity Is Bad Because It Can Lead To The Following
And obese person has an higher chance of getting infected with type 2 diabetes.
It is said to be the number one cause of type 2 diabetes, which greatly increases a persons risk by up to ten.
Diabetes is caused by the absence of insulin secretion due to either the progressive or marked inability of the β-Langerhans islet cells of the pancreas to produce insulin, or due to defects in insulin uptake in the peripheral tissue.
Data from Public Health England suggests that nearly a third (31.2%) of children aged 2 to 15 years old are obese.
Making the UK, the country with the highest level of obesity in Europe, with more than 1 in 4 (28.1%) adults obese and nearly two out of three (63.4%) overweight.
And the numbers are expected to rise. In fact, it is expected that in the next 20 years the numbers of obese adults would be in the range of 26 million people.
Being overweight or obese increases one’s chances of getting diabetes. Weight gain and body mass are central to the formation and rising incidence of type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
Body mass index has a strong relationship to diabetes and insulin resistance. 2
Studies suggests that obese people are up to 80 times more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than those with a Body Mass Index of less than 22.
Obesity is believed to account for 80-85% of the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
Too much abdominal fat and by extension a large waistline is known as central or abdominal obesity. Which is considered to be a particularly high-risk form of obesity.
In the absence of a healthy lifestyle comprised of cleaner diets and body exercise, obesity can lead to type 2 diabetes over a relatively short period of time.
According to the NHS, a 5% reduction in body weight followed up by regular moderate intensity exercise could reduce a persons type 2 diabetes risk by more than 50%.
Thus obesity is bad because it can lead to diabetes.
2. Heart Problems
When it comes to a healthy heart obesity stands as an obstruction.
Obesity is associated with an increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD), particularly heart failure (HF) and coronary heart disease (CHD).
The pro-inflammatory cytokines produced by the adipose tissue itself can induce cardiac dysfunction and promote the formation of atherosclerotic plaques.
Obesity is a strong independent predictor of CVD even in the absence of other risk factors.
Data resulting from the Framingham study suggests that overweight and obesity increase the risk of developing HF. 3
“An increase in body fat can directly contribute to heart disease through atrial enlargement, ventricular enlargement and atherosclerosis,” says Harold Bays, MD, FACC.
“through promotion of sleep apnea, thromboembolic disease and onset or worsening of metabolic diseases that are major cardiovascular disease risk factors, including dyslipidemia, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and metabolic syndrome,” 4
Obesity leads to structural and functional changes of the heart, which causes heart failure.
The altered myocardial structure increases the risk of atrial fibrillation and sudden cardiac death.
According to data from the Framingham Heart Study, the rise of BMI by 1 kg/m2 increases the risk of heart failure by 5% in the case of men and 7% in the case of women.
Studies on heart failure show that 32%–49% of patients suffering from heart failure are obese and 31%–40% are overweight. 5
Thus obesity is bad because it messes with our heart.
3. Bad Cholesterol Levels
Obesity increases the triglycerides and bad cholesterol (LDL) levels in the blood. While also in a lot of obesity persons reduces the levels of good cholesterol (HDL ).
A cholesterol profile that leads to narrowing of blood vessels and which is leading cause of atherosclerosis.
Obesity increases cardiovascular risk through risk factors such as increased fasting plasma triglycerides, high LDL cholesterol, low HDL cholesterol, elevated blood glucose and insulin levels and high blood pressure.
Another bad side to obesity and rising bad cholesterol levels is that it can lead to Familial hypercholesterolemia or FH.
A situation where high cholesterol levels can be inherited. It is an inherited defect in how the body recycles LDL (bad) cholesterol. People with FH are essentially born with high LDL cholesterol. 6
In other words obesity can get you to sabotage the future of your unborn kids.
Facts show that men with FH get coronary heart disease up to 20 years earlier. While half of men with untreated FH will have a heart attack or angina before they turn 50. For others it will be as early as their 20s.
In women, coronary heart disease appears up to 30 years earlier. Thirty percent of untreated women will have a heart attack before they turn 60.
Obesity is bad because it makes it easier for you to pass on a bad health profile to your kids.
4. Acid Reflux
Obesity can also cause acid reflux or rather gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD) as it is otherwise known.
A condition where heartburn is caused when acids leaks backwards into the esophagus.
Epidemiological data have demonstrated that obesity is an important risk factor for the development of gastroesophageal reflux disease.
Data also shows that obesity is associated with complications related to longstanding reflux such as erosive esophagitis, Barrett’s Esophagus, and esophageal adenocarcinoma.
Studies shows that the prevalence of GERD is increasing and the major contributing factor to this trend is the rising prevalence of obesity. 7
Obviously, there appears to be an association with successful weight loss and fewer GERD symptoms.
5. High Blood Pressure
Being overweight means you have become a candidate for High Blood Pressure.
According to a statistical estimate over 25 percent of hypertensive cases are due to increased body weight.
High blood pressure is more likely if you’re overweight or obese. Obesity increases the risk of the development of hypertension.
Studies predict that by 2025 an estimated 1.56 billion people worldwide would suffer from high blood pressure. Which would be a 60% rise from the numbers in 2000.
The Framingham Heart Study suggests that approximately 78% of the hypertension cases in men and 65% in women can be directly attributed to obesity. 8
Nearly all of the evidence linking obesity to cancer risk comes from large cohort studies, a type of observational study.
Obese and overweight women are two to about four times as likely as normal-weight women to develop endometrial cancer (cancer of the lining of the uterus), and extremely obese women are about seven times as likely to develop the more common of the two main types of this cancer.
People who are overweight or obese are about twice as likely as normal-weight people to develop a type of esophageal cancer called esophageal adenocarcinoma, and people who are extremely obese are more than four times as likely.
People who are obese are nearly twice as likely as normal-weight people to develop cancer in the upper part of the stomach, that is, the part that is closest to the esophagus.
People who are overweight or obese are up to twice as likely as normal-weight people to develop liver cancer.
People who are overweight or obese are nearly twice as likely as normal-weight people to develop renal cell cancer, the most common form of kidney cancer. 16
People who are overweight or obese are about 1.5 times as likely to develop pancreatic cancer as normal-weight people.
People who are obese are slightly (about 30%) more likely to develop colorectal cancer than normal-weight people
Another obvious reason why obesity is bad is due to the long suffering from joint pains.
Too much body weight eventually causes damages to the joint surfaces which in turn can lead to joint problems.
The most significant impact of obesity on the musculoskeletal system is associated with osteoarthritis (OA), a disabling degenerative joint disorder characterized by pain, decreased mobility and negative impact on quality of life.
Obesity is the greatest modifiable risk factor for osteoarthritis. obesity contributes to incidence and progression of osteoarthritis, with the strongest relationship being at the knee.
Weight loss improves symptoms of osteoarthritis and can slow disease progression. 14
Being only 10 pounds overweight increases the force on the knee by 30-60 pounds with each step.
Population-based studies have consistently shown a link between overweight or obesity and knee osteoarthritis.
Even small amounts of weight loss can reduce the risk of developing knee osteoarthritis.
Preliminary studies suggest weight loss decreases pain substantially in those with knee osteoarthritis. 15
Gout is another painful reason why obesity is bad.
For as a disease it can cause painful arthritis that can affect toes, ankles, and other joints due to the deposits of uric acid crystals in the joint cavity.
Gout is more common in overweight people. The more you weigh, the more likely you are to get gout.
Normally, uric acid is eliminated through your kidneys. But the more you weigh, the less efficiently your kidneys work.
People who have visceral fat (belly fat) – even if they’re not technically overweight – are more likely to develop gout. 12
According to Dr. Hyon Choi, lead author of a study about how fat can lead to gout and a researcher at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
“Blood uric acid levels go up when people are obese, drink too much, eat certain things, or take diuretics, which leads to the increased risk of gout,”
Choi said by email.
“In contrast, blood uric acid levels go down if people lose weight or change their diet or drinking habits or stop taking diuretics, which would reduce the risk of developing gout.” 13
9. Sleep Apnea
Obesity is also another cause of obstructive sleep apnea .
Sleep apnea is a serious sleep disorder that occurs when a person’s breathing is interrupted during sleep .
People with untreated sleep apnea stop breathing repeatedly during their sleep, multiple times.
In adults, the most common cause of obstructive sleep apnea is excess weight and obesity, which is associated with soft tissue of the mouth and throat.
More than half of people with obstructive sleep apnea are either overweight or obese.
According to WebMD, each unit increase in BMI is associated with a 14% increased risk of developing sleep apnea, and a 10% weight gain increases the odds of developing moderate or severe obstructive sleep apnea by six times. 9
Weight loss appears to confer benefits not only on Obstructive Sleep Apnea severity but also in terms of mitigating cardiometabolic consequences related to both Sleep Apnea and obesity. 10
Obesity is a potent risk factor for the development and progression of sleep apnea.
Central obesity accounts for the strong male predominance of this disorder, whereas peripheral adiposity may protect women from developing sleep apnea.
Obesity’s effect on sleep apnea susceptibility is related to the distribution of adiposity between the central and peripheral regions. 11
Allowing obesity into your life is not a thing of joke. But a serious health decision, not to be taken lightly.
Being overweight or obese is a sure way to destroy the natural pleasures of being alive.
Obesity is responsible for too much diseases and must be avoided by any means necessary.
By maintaining a healthy weight you stand the chance of living a life free from excessive pains, even as you age.
